Differences Between OPC, PCC, and PPC Cement: Uses and Prices

When starting a building construction or house renovation project, choosing the right materials is one of the key factors to consider. For this reason, it is important to understand the characteristics of the materials used to avoid making the wrong choice.

One of the main materials used in almost every project is cement. At first glance, all cement looks the same. However, several types of cement have different formulas and uses, such as OPC, PCC, and PPC. To avoid choosing the wrong one, read this article to understand the differences between these three.

What Is OPC Cement?

OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement), commonly called Type I Portland Cement, is pure cement with no additives. OPC cement is made from clinker (limestone or clay) and gypsum.

OPC cement is one of several basic cement types widely used in construction projects. It is used to make concrete or plaster by mixing cement, water, and aggregates.

OPC cement has several key characteristics, including high adhesion and compressive strength, a relatively fast setting time, susceptibility to corrosion and weathering when exposed to moisture and acids, and a fairly high shrinkage rate.

OPC cement is relatively expensive compared to the other two types of cement. It costs the most because it is made primarily from pure clinker with no additives. For a 50-kg bag, OPC cement costs IDR 68,000 to IDR 115,000.

What Is PCC Cement?

PCC (Portland Composite Cement) is a type of cement produced by grinding Portland clinker together with a mixture of additives, such as pozzolan, limestone, slag, and fly ash.

Some characteristics of this PCC cement include its fine grain size, which produces a smooth surface with minimal risk of hairline cracks, and its high workability, making it suitable for wall construction and finishing.

One of the main advantages of PCC cement is its good strength and durability. Even when exposed to acids, this type of cement does not corrode or deteriorate easily, making it suitable as a concrete mix component for constructing houses, bridges, and highways.

PCC cement is the most affordable of the three cements discussed here. In addition to being inexpensive, PCC cement is also widely available because it is a standard material for various types of buildings. PCC cement costs IDR 63,000 to IDR 80,000 per 50-kg bag.

What Is PPC Cement?

PPC (Pozzolan Portland Cement) is a type of cement made from a mixture of Portland clinker and pozzolanic materials such as fly ash, silica fume, and slag. The percentage of pozzolanic materials in PPC cement is relatively high, ranging from 15–35%, giving it high resistance to aggressive environments such as coastal areas with high sulfate and chloride levels.

In addition to resisting aggressive environments, PPC cement can also withstand moisture. Its hardening process is relatively slow, but it produces structures that remain strong and stable over the long term. The mixture’s structure is also highly waterproof, helping prevent leaks and weather-related cracks.

PPC cement costs slightly more than PCC cement because it uses a higher proportion of pozzolanic materials to enhance its resistance to water and moisture. For a 50 kg bag, PPC cement costs range from IDR 65,000 to IDR 82,000.

Main Ingredients

OPC cement is made from 95% pure Portland clinker and 5% gypsum, with no other additives. Meanwhile, PCC and PPC are made from Portland clinker and a mixture of other materials. PCC cement contains a mixture of pozzolans, limestone, slag, and fly ash, while PPC contains a mixture of fly ash, silica fume, and slag.

Setting Speed

OPC cement sets relatively quickly, with a very rapid increase in compressive strength during the first 1–7 days. Meanwhile, PCC cement sets at a more measured and balanced rate. As for PPC cement, the initial setting is relatively slower.

Risk of Hairline Cracks

This risk of cracking is influenced by hydration heat (heat generated when cement mixes with water). OPC cement has a high risk of cracking because its chemical reaction produces high heat and its hardening process is very rapid.

PCC cement has a low risk of hairline cracking because its hardening rate and heat release are more stable. Meanwhile, PPC cement has a very low risk because its slow hardening process results in minimal heat release.

Resistance to Water and Chemicals

OPC cement tends to absorb water containing sulfates or acids because of its porous structure. Meanwhile, PCC cement has better resistance, though it still falls within the “normal” category. Furthermore, PPC cement is highly impervious to water and other chemicals.

Applications

OPC cement is designed for building construction projects that require high load-bearing capacity, such as pile foundations, columns in multi-story buildings, bridges, and concrete roads (rigid pavement).

PCC cement is versatile, the most economical, and ideal for various residential and housing construction projects. This cement is suitable for floor casting, wall-mounting adhesives, plaster mixes, and finishing coats.

PPC cement is prioritized for building construction that will be frequently exposed to high humidity or chemicals, such as the construction of swimming pools, water storage tanks, underground basements, port docks, and building foundations in damp areas like peatlands or swamps.

That concludes the explanation regarding the definitions, prices, uses, and differences between OPC, PCC, and PPC. Now that you understand their characteristics and applications, you can choose the best material for your next construction project.
